Children and families
We believe that legal, policy and practice frameworks for making decisions affecting families should be based on robust evidence about the best interests of children, especially where they are growing up in adverse conditions.
Our main areas of interest are: child welfare and development; early years education and childcare; and child protection and placement. Many of our grants in early years are jointly managed with our Education Programme.
We also funded a programme of work focussing on time trends in adolescent mental health.
Recent projects funded by our Children and Families Programme include a study of the maintenance situations of single parents on benefit, analysis of the current provision of childcare across the UK, and an examination of the relationship between deprivation and children's services outcomes in different local authorities.
You can see some examples in the Our work in this area section of this page.
