The Nuffield Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Dame Clare Tickell to its Board of Trustees.
Clare is an Independent Director at the John Lewis Partnership and a Non-Executive Director at the National Audit Office. She brings extensive leadership and governance experience gained in roles across the social housing and charitable sectors.
From 2014 to 2018, Clare was Chief Executive of the Hanover Housing Association, one of England’s leading providers of affordable housing and services for the over-55s. Her other roles have included Chief Executive of Action for Children and Chief Executive of the Stonham Housing Association. Clare was formerly Chair of the Early Intervention Foundation and a Non-Executive Director on the board of the Information Commissioner’s Office.
In 2011, Clare produced an independent report on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for the government, in which she recommended making the EYFS more accessible for parents and teachers. She has a wealth of experience of working with local and national government, civil society organisations, researchers and practitioners to improve the lives of people living in disadvantaged communities. This commitment was recognised in the 2010 New Years Honours when she was awarded a DBE for services to young people.
As a Trustee, Clare will bring invaluable experience to our work across our core domains of Education, Welfare and Justice, in addition to a proven track record in governance. Clare was appointed following a selection process run by the Nuffield Foundation’s Nomination and Governance Committee and her term as Trustee will begin on 1 April 2022.
Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Nuffield Foundation said:
“Clare’s expertise in social housing, social policy and education cuts across the work of the Nuffield Foundation and aligns closely with our mission to advance educational opportunity and social well-being.
“Clare’s appointment will further strengthen our Board of Trustees and bring a fresh perspective to the Foundation’s work to make life better for people by addressing inequalities and disadvantage in our society.”
Dame Clare Tickell said:
“It is a privilege to be joining the Nuffield Foundation, whose important work makes such an impact on the policy areas that matter to so many people. I have long admired the work that the Foundation does and look forward to playing my full part as a Trustee.”
