A look back at our November 2024 event and a warm welcome to our ambassadors.
In Autumn 2023, we launched the Nuffield Foundation Emerging Researchers Network, to provide training and networking opportunities for early career researchers (ECRs) working on projects funded by the Foundation.
During 2024, we initiated a regular newsletter, established an active LinkedIn group, and offered training with The Conversation on how to write for media and engaging effectively with parliamentary audiences. However, it was our recent in-person gathering this November that truly reinforced the value of the Network.
Highlights from the event
The full-day event, with the theme ‘Research in a changing policy climate’, featured great presentations from Dr Rajnaara Akhtar, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick and Dr Arun Advani, Director of the Centre for Analysis of Taxation. They shared insights on achieving impact with research, emphasising the importance of ongoing conversations with key policymakers and maintaining a long-term dialogue that extends beyond the finish date of a project.
Contributions from Susannah Bowyer at Research in Practice reminded us of the potential to collaborate with local policymakers and grassroots organisations, while Alaster Smith, Head of Research Evidence and Engagement at the Department for Education, stressed the need to craft concise summaries.

Workshops and networking opportunities
Workshops explored building partnerships with the third sector, ensuring research is heard in parliament, and writing for non-academic audiences. Alex Beer, Head of Grants Operations and Portfolio Development, and Vivienne Jackson from the abrdn Financial Fairness Trust offered reflections on what constitutes a strong funding bid.
While the content was rich and informative, the most valued aspect appeared to be the opportunity for network members to connect and share ideas. Conversations among participants filled the room with energy, highlighting the need for more networking opportunities in 2025.
Looking ahead
In 2025, our recently recruited ambassadors, Emily Hancock, Fiona Long and Cristina Sechel, aim to ensure that the network meets the needs of our ECRs.
We asked them to share their reflections on the day:
“I thoroughly enjoyed attending the event and meeting so many other ECRs! The conversations were incredibly valuable, not just for discussing our research but also for sharing our experience of being ECRs, in what felt to me like an understanding environment. These conversations about desired support will guide us ambassadors and we are eager to prioritise them!” (Emily)
“This event was great. I was thrilled to be a part of so many lively conversations and to get to know so many of my peers. On the day, ECRs made some great suggestions for future events and sessions. I am always keen to hear more, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.” (Fiona)
“I am thrilled to join forces with fellow ECRs to extend the reach and usefulness of the network. Together, we can amplify our voices and make a lasting impact on the career development of our members. I look forward to bringing you new and exciting events for 2025.” (Cristina)
