Making our grant funding more equitable

By Nuffield Foundation

We’re working with Hello Brave to hear from and learn how we can support Black researchers

The Nuffield Foundation is committed to becoming a more inclusive funder. As a first step towards this goal, we have commissioned Hello Brave to start a conversation with Black researchers to better understand the barriers they face when going through the funding process.

In 2021, the Foundation started collecting data on the characteristics of both our applicants and our grant-holders. These figures revealed that researchers from Black or Black British backgrounds are less likely to be awarded grants.

We recognise that to achieve our mission of funding research that changes lives, we need to better support and engage with researchers who reflect the diverse nature of our society. On our journey toward embedding principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in everything we do, we want to ensure that we’re consulting and listening to the voices of under-represented groups.

Hello Brave, experts in inclusive research design and practices, will help us to explore what action we can take to make our grant funding processes more equitable. Hello Brave will host a series of focus groups to better understand the experiences of Black researchers in our three focus areas Education, Justice and Welfare. The Nuffield Foundation will reflect and build on the outcomes of these sessions as part of our strategy development

We improve people’s lives by funding research that informs social policy, primarily in Education, Welfare and Justice. We also fund student programmes that give young people skills and confidence in science and research.

We offer our grant-holders the freedom to frame questions and enable new thinking. Our research must stand up to rigorous academic scrutiny, but we understand that to be successful in effecting change, it also needs to be relevant to people’s experience.
