The submission shares insights on the use of generative AI and foundation models
The Ada Lovelace Institute Opens in a new window and the Nuffield Foundation Opens in a new window submitted a response to the Department for Education’s call for evidence on generative AI in education Opens in a new window.
The Ada Lovelace Institute (Ada) is an independent research institute with a mission to ensure data and AI work for people and society, co-established by the Nuffield Foundation. Education is the largest of the Foundation’s three research areas (the others being welfare and justice) and a priority for the Foundation is understanding how harnessing digital technologies might improve teaching and learning, parental engagement, and child development.
The consultation response provides an overview of potential opportunities, benefits, risks and concerns around uses of generative AI and foundation models Opens in a new window (an emerging type of AI system sometimes called a ‘general-purpose AI’ or ‘GPAI’ system). These are capable of a range of general tasks (such as text synthesis, image manipulation and audio generation). It also lays out the legal and regulatory considerations affecting their deployment in education.
Ada and the Nuffield Foundation are also collaborating on research into the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies in education. Learn more here.
