Data With No Name
This activity is from CensusAtSchool and takes an unusual approach to illustrate the significance of context in statistics.
A set of data is presented with little background information. Students are invited, via a series of questions, to create an appropriate context by trying to infer which question was being asked to generate the data. The intention is that students can argue about the relationship between patterns in data and contextual features by critiquing each other's imagined contexts. The students are encouraged to use spreadsheets to consider average and spread in the data.
