Nuffield Research Placements

Nuffield Research Placements (previously Nuffield Science Bursaries) provide over 1,000 students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists (including quantitative social scientists), technologists, engineers and mathematicians.

Students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course studying at a state-maintained school or college in the UK are eligible to apply. The majority of the placements will go to students from low-income households. We also provide placements to students who do not have a family history of going to university. We make sure no one is excluded on a financial basis by covering students' travel costs and providing weekly bursaries for eligible students. Please see our application criteria for more information on which students are eligible to apply.

Projects take place in the summer holidays and must have broadly scientific or technical content, but they don't have to be based in a laboratory. They might be office-based or include fieldwork, or they might focus on engineering, data science or computer science. Placements take place across the UK and are administered at a regional level by a network of Nuffield Coordinators. They are here to help you every step of the way. See some case-studies to get an idea of some projects that previous Nuffield students have undertaken.

Applications for summer placements 2019 will open in October 2018.
